All about Carmel
Carmel is a little field with big plans a small team of workers and gardeners are busy transforming a former agricultural field into a community garden.
Started in 2019, the 5-acre site in Bergh Apton was previously agricultural and had been used for crops and sheep grazing in recent years, but the group had a vision to use it for a quiet place for people to visit and be able to experience the beauty of nature.
What is there to see?
Since starting with a blank slate, the site has seen the addition of over 700 hedging plants, a vegetable garden, orchard, and over 100 trees planted. There is a large pond, a quiet corner and two large flower beds, an Italian border and a sundial garden. The rest of the site is long meadow grass with mown paths that visitors can follow.
An owl box added earlier this year has been successful with the first brood fledging in May, and a pair of ducks have taken up residence in the pond which was created last Autumn. The site is also home to several beehives and there are frequently buzzards, red kites and oystercatchers overhead.
The site will continue to develop, with plans for a water feature, herb garden and wildflower meadow.
Can I visit?
Yes! Carmel welcomes anyone seeking respite from our busy world. We very much hope it refreshes and inspires. Those of us involved with the pioneering work appreciate the healing qualities of gardens and all natural environments. Please contact us on thewell@carmelmeadow.com for directions.
How are you funded?
So far, this initiative has been funded entirely by private donations from the Trustees, but we would be delighted if, in the future, others were able to support the ongoing work and development.
Thank Yous!
We wouldn’t be able to keep Carmel going without lots of hours of unpaid time and effort. Extra special thank you’s are due to:
