Is it Spring yet?
It has been a very disappointing Spring season this year with barely any warm days. On the plus side this has meant a much lower level of maintenance has been needed and our regular visits to the garden did not start up again until the last week of April.
On the wildlife front, a pair of ducks have taken up residence on the pond and we have a resident barn owl, judging by the amount of pellets under the owl box that we installed. We are hopeful that they will breed again this year. We found a newt overwintering in the polytunnel and the bees have already produced more honey than in the entirety of the previous year.
We had to carry out some unexpected maintenance to the water pipe after discovering that the nearby willow tree had sent its roots underneath and dislodged some connections. The extreme dry weather last year obviously caused some plants to get creative with searching out water.
We are thinking about our plans for the year ahead and currently we will not be introducing anything new, due to a lack of volunteers. We can just about maintain what we have now, but nothing more.
